Max Factor, pioneer of the cosmetics industry, was born in 1872. Originally wig master and make-up artist to the Imperial Theatres of Czarist Russia, he emigrated to the US in 1904 where he opened a store in Los Angeles selling perfume, make-up and hair accessories.

In 1909 he founded Max Factor and Company. He was the first person to produce make-up especially for the film industry. In 1914, Max Factor perfected a grease-paint in cream format which was much thinner and more flexible than anything available at that time.

Film stars such as Lucille Ball, Jean Harlow, and Charlie Chaplin were among the first to use this revolutionary new product. Under Max Factor’s guidance, make-up in the movies started to become a glamorous art. By 1930 he was exporting to 81 countries worldwide.

Throughout the 1940s and 1950s classics such as Pan Stik and Crème Puff were launched. In the 1960s, Max Factor swept the fashion scene with artificial eyelashes, fluid eyeliner and the first cake eyeliner as well as eye-shadow sticks, waterproof crème mascara and eye make-up remover pads.

Procter & Gamble acquired the Max Factor company in 1991.
